Tips for Getting to Know Your Coworkers

Last updated 4 years ago

If you have a full-time job, you’re likely spending as much time with your coworkers as with your own family. Given their presence in your life, making an effort to know your fellow employees can make your working relationships more productive and even result in a new friendship or two. Whether it’s at lunchtime or the next corporate party, consider these tips for getting to know the people at your office.

Volunteer for Group Projects
Some jobs may not allow for frequent mingling sessions with coworkers. If you sit at a desk all day, typing away at a computer, it can be difficult to find chances to socialize with other employees. Volunteering for the occasional group project can provide the perfect opportunity for coworker conversations. Because they take an inclusive effort from all involved, you’ll also find that group projects can build camaraderie among coworkers.

Ask About Their Interests
When you’re sitting at lunch or enjoying a coffee break, use it as a chance to ask your coworkers questions about their lives and interests. Some individuals may frown on personal conversations on company time, but when you’re on a break, you’re free to open up discussions to topics that extend beyond the next meeting or deadline. You might discover that the people sitting just a cubicle away share some of the hobbies you love.

Forget Work Every Once in a While
Just because you work with these people doesn’t mean you can’t also have fun with them. Leave your workspace responsibilities at the office and arrange a party or two with your fellow employees. You can coordinate an event as simple as a group dinner or do something truly memorable like an outing to a sports arena or recreational complex. With time, you may find that your office acquaintances become lifelong friends.
